The DBI3 is, to our knowledge, the only balloon instrument in the world that has FAA and EASA approval. It has a metal body, one Bluetooth antenna and one GPS antenna. It also has a rotary switch that ensures safe travelling with the DBI3 totally disconnected from the battery.
Features include altimeter, variometer, and temperature indicating displays, as well as a flight timer, audio alarms, and an integral GPS showing ground track and speed. The DBI3 also has an on-board flash memory capable of storing up to 10,000 hours of recoverable flight data. The DBI3 is powered by an integral LiPo battery lasting up to 12 hours per charge; no replaceable batteries to contend with. The DBI3 is FAA/EASA approved which more or less means world wide.

Digitool has been active in electronic and software research and development since 1985. The DBI3 is the 3rd generation of our balloon instruments. Digitool Instruments has pilot experience in ballooning since the late seventies. Together with Digitool US we have designed and FAA/EASA approved all our instruments.
In addition to the DBT3 top-temperature wireless sensor, DigiTool Instruments now introduce a DBA3-V02 blue tooth ambient-temp/dewpoint sensor. The DBA3 is to be mounted outside the basket and away from temperature radiating objects such as people and machines. This will produce a highly accurate ambient temperature and air humidity reading.
Similar types of equipment have been installed also on aircraft. With the new DBA3 you will be able to see the current cloud base from your take-off site and give you an indication of the weather/cloud development before take-off.
Initial temperature accuracy is ±0.2C (±0.4F) and humidity accuracy ±2%.
The picture shows the DBI3 dewpoint display. The dewpoint line also shows the temperature dewpoint spread (marked in brackets).
We hope you will enjoy those brand-new innovative features!
The first Digitool Balloon Instrument model 3, the DBI3, made its debut during the 2017 Albuquerque International Balloon festival. Today we have reached the sale of 600 units in the USA and around 300 in the rest of the world anticipating the target number of 1000 units in 2021.
The concept is a sturdy but user- and ballooning-friendly, multifeatured FAA/EASA approved unit with an affordable price tag.
In May 2021 we will introduce the first mobile weather station for hot air balloons as a feature for our DBI3 on the market.
